We started the morning with a sumptuous breakfast, then headed off to the main part of the day’s programme at the government bunker in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. There, we were given a guided tour of the remaining bunker facilities and learnt a great deal. It wasn’t just about the impressive engineering work in the bunker, but above all about its history.
This has far-reaching implications than one might think and also touches on the history of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Cold War and a number of (more or less) well-kept state secrets. We found the guided tour fascinating, but it also left us pensive and somewhat shocked. We continued to discuss it further over lunch afterwards.
The visit was definitely worth it for us, and we’re taking away not only new insights but also a shared experience.
