Shaftless magnetic couplings are often used in the drive units of blood pumps 💉 in order to drive the rotor of the pumps. For this to work, the drive magnets rotate with the motor shaft ⚙, the magnets in the rotor are driven by it and the rotor rotates without contact.
The coupling has to fulfill several functions. In addition to transmitting the motor torque 🔄, it also acts as part of the bearing. This means it holds the rotor in its position and orientation. This helps to dampen shocks and enable friction-free running. Using the “magnet tester” 🧲 we can measure forces and torques caused by displacement ➡, tilting ↖ and twisting ↩. We use this information to design the bearing and compare theory with reality.
