How To - Blood pump development Part 1 - Performance characteristics
Blood pumps have to be put through their paces during their development cycle! As part of a funding project, we have the opportunity to test various blood pumps and to optimize their performance. We will be highlighting some aspects of the pump development here in a series of articles.
We will start by analysing the pump/flow characteristic curve, i.e. the behaviour of the pump at different flow rates and speeds. Using our in-house universal measuring box, we can very easily determine pressure-flow curves and thus determine the performance characteristics. This is mainly used to determine the hydraulic behaviour and efficiency of a pump.
The picture shows a 3D-printed functional prototype with the corresponding characteristic curve.
We will be presenting further aspects of blood pump development shortly!
